New York truck attack: Trump vows to tighten vetting

US President Donald Trump has ordered the Department of Homeland Security to "step up" vetting measures, after a deadly truck attack in New York. Eight people were killed and 11 injured when the driver of the truck hit people on a cycle path in Lower Manhattan. Five Argentines were among the dead. A 29-year-old man was shot by police as he left the car and detained. Media named him as Sayfullo Saipov, an Uzbek immigrant who came to the US in 2010. Officials said it was a terror attack. The suspect is now in a hospital. A note was found in the truck that referred to so-called Islamic State, law enforcement sources were quoted as saying by US media. Russia Saratov crash: Ice on sensors 'may be cause'

Speed sensors that were iced over may have caused a passenger jet to crash near Moscow, killing all 71 people on board, investigators say. The faulty instruments could have given the pilots wrong speed data, Russia's Interstate Aviation Committee said. The Saratov Airlines jet went down minutes after take-off from Moscow's Domodedovo airport on Sunday. More than 1,400 body parts and hundreds of plane fragments have been recovered from the crash site. What are the investigators saying? A preliminary analysis of the on-board flight recorder indicated the plane had problems two-and-a-half minutes after it took off, at an altitude of around 1,300m (4,265ft). Allowing Chinese President Xi Jinping to rule indefinitely will be seen by historians as a farce, a government critic has told the BBC. In a rare show of public dissent, ex-state newspaper editor Li Datong sent an open letter opposing the proposal. He says in the letter that scrapping term limits for the president and vice-president would sow the seeds of chaos. China's internet censors have been deleting critical comments across Chinese social media platforms. There had been widespread speculation that Mr Xi would seek to extend his presidency beyond 2023.
